Abstract This study is a cross-sectional study of a random sample of household adults residing in Dakahlia governorate. Adults of both sexes aged 15-65 years in both urban and rural areas were included. The target sample size is 810 subjects from the Dakahlia governorate. This is the same number used utilized for Egypt Demographic and Health Survey 2008 (EDHS 2008) in Dakahlia governorate. Data was collected by specialist psychiatrists after taking informed consent from chosen people after discussing with them about the aim of the study. Response rate was 83.6%. The 12-month prevalence of mental disorders was found to be almost 1 in 10 respondents (10.6%). It was found that the most frequent category of mental disorders according to the index of certainty of the PSE-10 is mood disorders (4.8%), followed by anxiety disorders (4.3%) , somatoform and dissociative disorders (1.4%). The least found disorders were the psychotic disorders (0.6%). If we consider sub clinical symptoms (minor psychiatric morbidity) as well, the one year prevalence of psychiatric symptoms reaches 17% of the population. Since the majority of mental disorders are in the form of depressive and anxiety disorders, the development of mental health resources should be directed toward the primary health care system, with all the implications for undergraduate education and training of primary care physicians. |
