Abstract

In recent years, many researchers have been involved in investigating the electromagnetic transient phenomena associated with the switching operations in offshore wind farms. It has been reported that, the single-core submarine cables are the most distinctive electric component in offshore wind farms. The effects of the sheath resistance, thickness of the semi-conductive layer, and the armor permeability of the single-core submarine cables on both transient overvoltages and transformers inrush currents are investigated. The effect of the capacitor inrush current on the transformer inrush current is also investigated. An investigation of ferroresonance phenomenon and its dangerous effects on the insulation systems of the electric components of the offshore wind farms is presented. The effect of the surge arresters on the suppression of ferroresonance is investigated. Also, a proposed protective method to eliminate the dangerous effects of repeated ferroresonance phenomenon is presented. An analysis of the back-flow lightning surge phenomenon in onshore wind farms is presented. This analysis is implemented for two different lightning surges. The analysis considers the non-linearity of the grounding system of the wind farm and the point on voltage wave when the surge strikes the wind tower. The effect of the addition of a grounding grid for each wind tower on the suppression of back-flow lightning surge phenomenon in the onshore wind farm is investigated.
