Abstract

The removal efficiency of the activated sludge process has been estimated experimentally using a special calculation of electrical conductivity. Experimental study has been carried out in Mansoura wastewater treatment plant to investigate a quick tool of its removal efficiency. During this experiment, electrical conductivity values have been observed for the raw wastewater and mixed liquor inside the reactors. Further, the electrical conductivity values have been related to removal efficiency of different parameters. It was confirmed that, there a reliable relation between the electrical conductivity values and the removal efficiency of treatment for each specific wastewater. Further, the electrical conductivity can be used accurately, to predict the water content of the sludge around some units, such as the final settler and sludge thickener. Finally, the minimum electrical conductivity values, which needed to achieve appropriate operation, could be estimated. As a result, safety factor was investigated for the system performance. Based on this study, similar curves can be prepared for each specific wastewater. The curves are simple and can be modified for any specified waste to provide a quick tool for operation, and analysis of such reactors based on the experience principles.
