Abstract

The use of the World Wide Web (WWW) for transfer information became the major method. Using the web-based software tools that assist in understanding the engineering concepts and implementing their algorithms is more advantageous. Programs that work on the Internet produce more friendly and interactive material to their users, besides; they are available to any student or instructor with Internet access. In this work, an interactive e-learning package with the basic semiconductor electronic devices (diode, NPN, PNP, NMOS, PMOS, NJFET and PJFET) is implemented. The developed package includes two main modules. The first module is an illustrative one that explains the characteristics of electronic devices using different educational techniques including interactive animations which realizes the corresponding theoretical characteristics. The second module contains a circuit analyzer program that can be used to analyze electronics circuits composed of semiconductor devices. Other passive elements (e.g., resistor, inductor and capacitor) as well AC and DC voltage sources are incorporated. The analyzer implements the modified nodal analysis technique to solve the electronic circuits. The analyzer determines the voltages at all circuit nodes and the currents at all circuit branches. It also contains an interactive oscilloscope that displays the signals at any circuit node. The Oscilloscope can display multiple signals at the same time. This package fully works on the Internet. Thus users of this package can access it any time from any place that has an Internet connection. This thesis is organized as follows: Chapter 1: This chapter introduces a common introduction about the research. It also lists the content of the thesis. Chapter 2: This chapter introduces an overview about using e-Learning interactive animations and simulation tools in engineering field commonly. It focuses on electronic engineering field, especially in semiconductor devices, and circuit analyzers. Chapter 3: This chapter describes the illustrative module which is mainly a group of java applets, which is divided into sub-groups, each one illustrates a certain concept of the basic semiconductor devices; diode, BJT, MOSFET and JFET. It also demonstrates the implementation of the theoretical information and how these data was extracted in a form to use it in a computer program. Chapter 4: This chapter describes the circuit analyzer module and its main parts, which are the device panel, the board panel, the ammeter and voltammeter and the oscilloscope. For each semiconductor device, brief information about converting the device from its nonlinear form to what is called its companion linear model is presented. Examples of circuits are presented, and how the analyzer deals with the circuit. Chapter 5: This chapter includes the conclusions and future work.
