Abstract

With cancer survival rates increasing , new directions have focused on issues of survivorships, with an intense focus on quality of life . One area gaining increased attention is fertility preservation and future parenthood among cancer survivors. Rates of permanent infertility and compromised fertility after cancer vary and result from many causes including cancer itself, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, surgery and palliative opioids. Sperm cryopreservation in male and embryo cryopreservation in female are currently the only highly successful method of preserving fertility before chemotherapy, radiotherapy or surgery affecting the reproductive system. Gonadal shielding and transposition are also options during radiotherapy treatment. However, experimental procedures such as gonadal tissue cryopreservation and hormonal or pharmacological protection might make the future of fertility preservation promising.
