Abstract

Octavia E. Butler (1947-2006) is an African American woman writer who gained international prominence for being the first black science fiction writer. She wrote twelve novels: Patternmaster (1976), Mind of my Mind (1977), Survivor (1978), Kindred (1979), Wild Seed (1980), Clay’s Ark (1984), Dawn (1987), Adulthood Rites (1988), Imago (1989), Parable of the Sower (1993), Parable of the Talents (1998), and Fledgling (2005). Later, her novels were organized in series: The Patternist Series that include Patternmaster, Mind of my Mind, Survivor, Wild Seed and Clay’s Ark; Lilith Brood series (formerly the Xenogenesis Trilogy) that includes Dawn, Adulthood Rites, Imago; Parable of the Sower series that include Parable of the Sower, Parable of the Talents. In addition, she wrote Blood Child, a volume of short stories that was published in 1995.
