Abstract

The recent study aims at tracing, comparing and contrasting some philosophical and social aspects that occupied the contexts of Ibn Tufayl’s extant work Hayy Ibn Yaqzan (between 1105 to 1185) and Daniel Defoe’s immortal novel Robinson Crusoe 1719. The two novels are old in age yet they include novel and creative ethics and values that never cease to be innovative in nature to a degree that enabled them to break through into time and live everlastingly. They aim primarily at bridging the gap between science and literature. The main axis around which they revolve is the human reason and its role in engendering all forms of knowledge, getting through hardships, surviving catastrophes, knowing the world in which we live and knowing its Creator as well; that is God the Al-Mighty. The two novels are also notable for their calling for utilizing the empirical method in the collection of data while pursuing scientific studies and combining the educational systems to certain objectives to fulfill; that is by shaping them to secure our needs. Moreover; they provide original insights into the nature of education, religious tolerance, peaceful co-existence, multiplicity and liberalism especially in matters of religion and acquiring knowledge. The philosophical aspects that will be discussed are: 1) The Empirical theory in science in the two novels and the role of the human intellect in engendering all forms of theoretical, practical, physical and metaphysical knowledge; 2) The concept of solitude and the rising tide of individualism that mark man’s relationship with society in the two novels. The social aspects are: 1) The theory of education in the two books, 2) The anthropological issue and man’s journey from the stage of primitiveness to the stage of civilization. The study will also shed light on the religious issue and the image and role of religion in the two books.
