Abstract In the last decades the consciousness of sustainable development in the construction industry was increasing rabidly as a result of the implementation of energy rating procedures. These systems helped assess building performance and gained more interest and applicability by time of those schemes which took place in building environmental assessment that are in use today, we selected: (1) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED). (2) Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM). (3) Green Star. This study aims to focus on the investigation of energy performance assessment and the sustainable building development for new and existing buildings within the LEED, BREEAM and Green Star schemes. A computer simulation is implemented, using software program HEED (Home Energy Efficient Design) which works for all kinds of homes or apartments or condos, works in over 1000 climates , does a fast, powerful hourly heat balance simulation, design and compare up to 9 schemes at once. The selected case study building is an existing model of housing developed in the Egyptian countryside and the work of a new model for rural housing, using the assessment of standard building codes. Through this study, an attempt is made to make clear how building energy performance is assessed and therefore imparted with energy credits under the LEED, BREEAM and Green Star schemes and to form a good basis for future development of a generic energy assessment framework in Egypt. |
