Abstract

The main aim of the present thesis is focused on the preparation of two hydrazone compounds derived from 2-acetylpyridine and oxalic acid hydrazide and malonic acid hydrazide as well as their complexes with VO2+, Cr3+, Mn2+, Fe3+, Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, Ag+ and Cd2+. The characterization is mainly carried out by elemental and thermal analyses, spectroscopy (UV-Vis, IR, 1HNMR and ESR) and magnetic measurements. The structure of the ligands and their complexes were elucidated by drawing the molecular modeling. The thesis also includes the activity of some of these complexes against bacteria. A brief description of the overall work in this thesis is summarized as follows: • Chapter one includes introduction consisting of a literature survey on the importance of hydrazone compounds in view of their medicinal, analytical and industrial applications. The review also includes a brief literature survey on some publications concerning the complexation of hydrazones related to the studied compounds. • Chapter two covers the experimental part and illustrates the experiments used in this work. It includes list of reagents, stock solutions along with the physical measurements and instrumentation. The preparation procedures of ligands and their complexes were also discussed in detail. In addition, this chapter includes the procedures for the antimicrobial activity of the ligands and their metal complexes. • Chapter three deals with the results and discussion. The most important data are summarized in three parts. In order to assess the influence of the structural properties of the chelating agent and the type of the metal on the thermal behavior of the complexes, the order (n) and the heat of activation E of the various decomposition stages were determined from the TG and DTG using the coats-Redfern and Horowitz-Metzger methods. This section includes also the determination of the thermo-dynamic parameters of activation (ΔH, ΔS and ΔG) which can be calculated by Eyring equation.
