Abstract Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is an effective therapy for patients with major psychosis and affective disorders, and if performed properly, it can be used with safety for most patients of all ages.Since the introduction of seizure therapy in 1934, the treatment process had undergone many changes that, in spite of enhancing its efficacy and safety, had also complicated its evaluation. The early ECTs-were ”unmodified” Le. neither supplemented by sedation, anesthesia, neuromuscular blockade, nor supplementary oxygenation and ventilation. Amnesia and cyanosis were believed to be a part of the therapeutic process, and instead of being avoided, were encouraged . |
