Abstract
The study w a s c a r r i e d o u t on 73 p a t i e n t s with S. Mansoni i n f e c t i o n as evidenced by t h e presence of t h e S. Mansoni ova i n ’ t h e i r s t o o l s or by t h e rectal s n i p test, besides 25 healthy s u b j e c t s were included t.o s e r v e as c o n t r o l s . The cases w e r e c o l l e c t e d from Ahmed Maher Hospital, and t h e I n s t i t u t e of Research for Tr opi cal Medi ci ne, Cai r o, Egypt All cases underwent abdominal ul trasonography to give b e t t e r diagnosis for t h e l i v e r and spleen The s e r o l o g i c a l h e p a t i t i s CB3 m a r k e r s w e r e performed by commercially a v a i l a b l e kits using t h e Elisa technique The cases were divided i n t o t w o groups group C 1 3 : - 43 a d u l t cases with negative h e p a t i t i s CB3 m a r k e r s i.e. they have never ha.d h e p a t i t i s CB3 i n f e c t i o n These cases w e r e subdivided i n t o t h r e e subgroups G -- 11 cases i n t h e e a r l y s t a g e , i.e. l i v e r and spleen were 1tcr)’ nornml i n s i z e - 17 cases with hepatosplenomegaly, i . s. t h e l i v e r and spl een were en1 arged G .- 15 cases with asci tfs, splenomegaly and shrunken l i v e r
