Abstract

Ferritin is a specialised protein involved in the intracellular storage of iron. It is widely distributed throughout the animal and plant kingdoms and has been detected in virtually all body tissues. The highest concentrations of tissue ferritin are found in the liver, spteen and bone marrow (the major sites of iron storage in humans. Following the development of senstive RIA,ELIZA, IRMA techniques, ferritin has also been detected extracellularly in a variety of body fluids, including serum, urine, saliva and cerebrospinal fluid. Because of the wide tissue distribution of ferritin, we thought that its determination in the cerebrospinal fluid of patients might help in the diagnosis of various neurological disorders and perhaps give insight into their pathogenesis.
