Abstract Knowledge of diabetes dates back to centuries before christ. It is quite true t h a t much htis been learned about its c h a r a c t e r i s t i c s since man first observed ant’s inordinate a t t r a c t i o n to t h e urine of d i a b e t i c s , and since he discovered its sweet t a s t e . However many o t h e r problems s t i l l evades man’s gr a sp (1). The Egyptian Papyrus Ebers (1500 B. C. ) described an i l l n e s s ussoci.uted with the passage of too much urine. Areataeus of Cappadocia a Greek Physician gave the name diabetes (a siphon) (2). He made the f i r s t . complete c l i n i c a l description, describing it as !la melting down of f l e s h and limbs i n t o urirrel’. AVICENNA, an Arab Physician, about 1000 A. D. gave a complete description of diabetes and i t s complications especially gangrene. |
