Abstract

Short segment Hirshsprung’s disease is one of the fairly common causes of outlet obstruction in infancy and childhood. It is a reasonable cause of chronic constipation in pediatric age group. In this study, we used a new procedure for anorectal myomectomy in the lateral site instead of the conventional posterior one working at the lateral side of the anus as a definitive surgical treatment to bypassing the aganglionic segment. The present study included twelve patients selected with short segment Hirshsprung’s disease admitted for operative treatment performing anorectal myomectomy through the new lateral procedure. All cases examined thoroughly pre-operatively and necessary routine investigations were done for them. Our patients were eight males and four females with a mean age of three years. Constipation was the main presenting symptom in all cases mostly dating since birth, distention in 83.3%, diarrheal enterocolitis in 25%and encopresis in 25%. Sixty seven percent with delayed passage of meconium, 33.3% of cases passed meconium within the normal time. Positive family history was found in 8.3%. All cases were in good health with average milestones. Other congenital anomalies occurred in 16.7% of cases.
