Abstract
Pain has been a major concern of humankind since our beginnings, and it has been the object of universal efforts to understand and to control it. Indeed, for there is reason to believe that pain is inherent in any life linked with consciousness. Apparently primitive humans had little difficulty in understanding pain associated with accidental injury but were mystified by pain caused by internal disease .
