Abstract

The present investigation had been undertaken to study the effect of mechanical and manual planting, numbez of plants pex unit area and nitrogen levels on cotton gxowth, yield and yield components, Field work and leboratory techniques were carried out a t Sakha Agxicultural Research Station through 1977 and 1978 seasons. Egyptian cotton Giza 75 variety (Gossypium barbadense L,) was planted on March 31, i n both seasons, All cultural practices except those under study were carried out as common practices in the area. The experimental design was s p l i t - s p l i t plot with fom xeplicates. The main plots were randomly assigned to two planting methods, the sub-plots t o the population densities end the sub-sub plots t o the three nitrogen levels, Planting methods were I1 manual plent ing, I2 mechenical planting. Plan-t densities were of approximately 70,000 {PI), 90,000 (P2) and 116,000 (P3) plants per fedden, respectively. The three nitrogen levels were 30 (N1), 60 (It2) and 75 (Nj) unit per feddan, Growth analysis was determined on six garded cotton plants taken from each plot. Sampling commenced 66 days after sowing in 1977 and 80 days a f t e r sowing in 1978 and continued a t two week intezval up t o 128 days in 1977 and 142 d~ysi n 1978. Three rows wi th a plot area of 9 m 2 which is equal t o k/466 Peddan sere devoted for yield detemminations. The r e s u l t s obtained during the two years of experimentation are sum~larized i n the following l i n e s , undex their xespective headings.
