Abstract

Clonidine , an alpha 2 adrenoceptor agonist , is an and hypertensive agent which decreases central sympathetic outflow therby reducing blood pressur and heart rate.Clonidine has been investigated as an adjunct to anesthesia, It was found to have an analgesic effect reducing the narcotic requirement during surgery. It causes sedation and potentiates the effect of general anesthetic agents and opioides.clonidine provides improved heamodynamic , metabolic and hormonal stability by attenuating the sympathoadrenal activation elicited by Anesthesia, tracheal intubation and surgery .A single oral dose of clonidine has been shown to produce anxiolysii and sedation when administered as a premedication , while it may not be of use as a routine premedication , it may be indicated when swings in blood pressure and heart rate might be potentially harmrull .
