Abstract

This study was designed to evaluate the genetic toxicity of some insecticides and food additives which are used frequently and introduced to the human diet. Several microbial bioassays were used in this evaluation and the obtained results could be summarized as follows: 1- Non of the used insecticides (lannate and endrin) and food additives (annatto, meat marker dye, sodium metabisulfate and ascorbic acid) proved to be neither mitotic crossing over nor mitotic gene conversion inducers in S.cerevisiae D, strain with any of the applied doses in this study. 2- Lannate insecticide was not effective as inducer of reverse mutations and petite colonies in g.cerevisiae D, strain. On the other hand, it was effective as reverse mutations inducer when used with 16 and 32 pg/ml in E.coli Wp, uvrA strain and with 2, 8 and 32 pg/ml for petite colonies induction in g.pombe ad-D, strain. It repressed the synthesis of xanthine oxidase in S.pombe a-D, . 3- Endrin insecticide proved to be non inducer of petite colonies in S.cerevisiae D,. However, it induced revertants in both of S.cerevisae and E.coli following its application.
