Abstract

Verapamil is the most common member of group of drugs known as calcium or slow channel blockers. Verapamil selectively inhibits slow calcium influx across excitable membranes. It thereby relaxes vascular smooth muscle, inhibits myocardial contractility and has depressant effects on the sinus node and atrioventricular conduction. Verapamil has been successfully used in the treatment of supraventricular t achyarrhythmia, because of its electrophysiological properties. The anesthetist will be faced with an increasing number of patients who are receiving verapamil or may require its administration to abolish dangerous tachyarrhythmias in the operating room. However, it is well known that inhalational anesthetics; enflurane and halthane in particular can augment the prolongation of P-R interval and hence the drug should be used causiosly if ever during enflurane and halothane anesthesia.
