Abstract Many different criteria have been used to predict the outcoine of trials to wean patients from mechanical ventilation . The ideal test would be one that could predict the outcome rapidly and accurately . Most of the commonly used indices , reported to be reliable , have good sensitivity and negative predictive value , that is , they are good predictors of successf~~l extubation . However , non of these indices reliably predicts weaning failure .A low gastric intramucosal pH , a reflection of gastro intestinal inucosal ischemia may occur early after blood flow redistribution to vital organs including respiratory muscles . So , gastric intramucosal pH may be used to assist clinicians in predicting outcomes of the weaning trials when the respiratory lnuscles are put in action . |
