Abstract The main purpose of t h i s i n v e s t i g a t i o n was t o determine the extent of both hybrid vigor, and general and s p e c i f i c combining a b i l i t y estimates, and t o study gene action and i n t e r a c t i o n from Flls of f i v e spring wheat c u l t i v a r s . Beterosis, expressed i n percent e i t h e r above or below the higher porent, was observed for a l l characters, but it was a t low l e v e l . The range i n percent h e t e r o s i s for nuaber of t i l l e r s was from -22.3 t o 21.4, for spike length from -10.9 t o 7.6, for number of s p i k e l e t s per spike range from -15.3 t o 20.4, for number of kernels per spike from -31.1 t o 36.6, and for grain yield per plant percent h e t e r o s i s rcnged from -30.7 t o 64.5. General combining a b i l i t y was s i g n i f i c a n t f o r number of t i l l e r s and spike length only, but s p e c i f i c combining a b i l i t y was s i g n i f i c a n t for number of tillersg number of kernels per spike, number of s p i k e l e t s per spike and grain yield per plcnt. In genezal, the dominance gene e f f e c t s were more importsnt than additive gene e f f e c t s . |
