Abstract
This work includes a histopathological and evaluational study of the biopsies of 112 cases of t e s t i c u l a r GCTs and 104 cases of ovarian GCTs, received i n the Department of Pathology - Tanta University and i n the private c l i n i c s i n Tanta during the period from 1981 - 1990. The p a r a f f i n blocks of these biopsies were c o l l e c t e d , resectioned and stained with Hematoxylin and Eosin, and re-examined. Special s t a i n s were used i n some cases includes P.A.S., Best’s Carmin, and Mallory s t a i n s . The c l i n i c a l data concerning age, b i l a t e r a - l i s m for a l l cases, and cryptorchidism f o r t e s t i c u l a r cases, were obtained from the department, and c l i n i c s archives. The incidence of various lesions i n the s e r i e s was determined and compared with the findings obtained i n the previous l i t e r a t u r e . The 112 t e s t i c u l a r cases were c l a s s i f i e d accorbding to the WHO c l a s s i f i c a t i o n , and as a r e s u l t , seminoma comprised 48.21%, teratoma 10.71%, yolk sac tumor 7.14%, embryonal carcinoma 3.57%, choriocarcinoma 3.5776, and 26.80% of t e s t i c u l a r cases were mixed tumors. Most of t h e s t u d i e d t e s t i c u l a r cases were highly malignant tumors. The average age incidence fore t e s t i c u l a r GCTs was 30 years. The b i l a t e r a l i t y was observed only i n 3.57% of t e s t i c u l a r cases while 7.14 of these cases have had a h i s t o r y of cryptorchidism. In contrast to t e s t i c u l a r GCTs, most of the studied ovarian GCTs were benign and according to the WHO classification,benign teratomas comprised 82.69% of ovarian cases, immature teratoma 3.85%, dysgerminoma 6.73%, yolk sac tumors 4.81% and mixed forms 1.92%. Jhbryonal carcinoma and pure choriocarcinoma were not encountered among t h e studied ovarian cases, The average age incidence f o r ovarian GCTs was 26 years. The b i l a t e r a l i t y was observed only among the cases of benign cystic teratoma, representing 9.53%.
