Abstract

Pulmonary function tests are used for qualitative and quantitative assessmjent of pulmonary function. They assist in the diagnosis and interpretation of pulmonary disease and they give a quantitation of the extent of impairment. Pulmonary function tests fall into two main cafiregoriess 1- Those relating to the bellow action of the chest and the lungs for moving air in and out of the alveoli . 2- Those pertaining to the passage of gas across the alveolar- capillary membrane. Other tests pertain to the resistance imparted by the lungs to the passage of gas, the pulmonary circulation and the mechanics or work of the lungs.
