Abstract

Merocyanine dyes of the stilbazolium b e t a i n e ( M ) and its functionalized (CI6M) compound have contiuous i n t e r e s t because of t h e i r extreme negative solvatochromic properties . In contrast t o t h e characterized protonated forms MH’, C~~MH’ which can undergo t r a n s --*cis photoisomerization under the e f f e c t of l i g h t ; the unprotonated c i s forms o.f . these compounds are strongly temperature dependent thermally cis-+ t r a n s isomeri z a t i o n . In order t o gain f u r t h e r i n s i g h t i n t o the solvatochromism of the dyes and the r e l a t i o n - o f solvatochromism and the thee rmal c i s -+trans r e a c t i o n , t h e s t u d i e s i n t h e p r e s e n t t h e s i s are concerned with the e f f e c t of medium on the spectroscopic propeties,protolytic equi l ibr ium and t h e thecmal c i s -+ t r a n sisomerization not only in solvents of d i f f e r e n t p o l a r i t i e s but also i n media of organized assemblies, such as aqueous micelles and reversed micelles This t h e s i s comprises s i x chapters In the first chapter : a general introdution foc the subject under investigation is given. 2he introduction includes the importance of the solvent e f f e c t on the spectroscopic propert i e s of organic molecules, the solvatochromism of some betaine compounds and the importance of merocyanine dyes as the subject of many reported s t u d i e s , as well as t h e i r u t i l i t y as a probe f o r the thermal c i s - + t r a n s reaction in homogeneous solutions and inmicelle.
