Abstract

The diffusion of silver from molten Ag salts into soda-limesilica glasses was studied. The self di rrusion 01- 22~nh 110 m into both soda-lime-silica and sodium aluminosilicate glasses was al-so studied. In order to determi-ne the state and concentration of silver in glass spectral measurements of glass were conducted before and after ion exchange and heat treatment. The electron microprobe was used to determine the concentration and distribution of silver and sodium in glass. Scientillationcounter was used to determine the diffusion profiles of 22~aan d ’l ollg by the residual activity method. The present work was initiated to examine the currently accepted mechanism of silver staining, to determine the ions in glass participating in the ion exchange with silver, to calculate the interdiffusion of Na-Ag and the self diffusion coefficients of 22~a& ’l ollg in the glasses studied, to test the optimum conditions of the ion exchange process and to calculate the thermodynamic factor. The results obtained show that the ion exchange process takes place between silver-from the molten salt-and sodium - from glass. The work supported the currently accepted mechanism for the staining process, i.e. it includes three stages : ion exchange of silver ions, reduction to metal silver atoms and aggregation to silver aggregates. The reduction of silver ions by thermal treatment takes place at -- 370•‹c whereas the aggregation process takes place at temperatures above 525•‹
