Abstract

The present study aimed to investigate the toxicant effect of different la~cidaal gents on the susceptibility of field collected larvae of Culex pipiens ( Tanta stain). Also to investigate the effect of those agents and their combinations on the biological activity of the mosquito and on the development of Wuchereria bancrofti in the vector. The agents used were : two insecticides (permethrin and fenitrothion) ;four IGRs (natural juvenile hormone. Altosid. 16 Bay Sir and DPX) and 4 surfactants (Triton X- 100, 2 ~8 C,, N
and juvenile homon extracted from Soy bean). 1. Susceptibility of Culex pipiens larvae to different larvicidal agents a. Chemical insecticides Two chemical insecticides representing two different groups were tested namely, permethrin (pyrethroid and -feni.trothion (organophosphorus). Results of those . - experimerits indicated that the larvae of Cx. pipiens were more susceptible to permethrin than fenitrothion. 6- ’Lnsect growth regulators Natural juvenile hormone and three IGRs, namely DPX, Bay Sir and Altosid were tested against Cx. pipiens larvae. On the basis of their LC5* values. the efficiency of the tested IGRs could be arranged as follows DPX, Bay Sir. natural juvenile hormone and Altosid. Four surfactants were evaluated against Cx. pipiens larvae namely. Triton X- 100. 2 ig, JH (1000) extracted fi-om Soy bean and C,,N. The susceptibility of Cx pipiens larvae to surfactants was most pronounced in the case of Triton X-100 and larvae appeared to be equally susceptible to 2 ~8 and JH (1000). With regards to C,,N low level of susceptibility was observed. 6- Soy bean extracts : Larval susceptibility to soy bean extracted in 5 different solvents was tested. Larvae were more susceptible to the internal content of soy bean than crude soy bean extracted in petroleum’ ether. On the basis of LC,, values. the efficiency of the other extracts could be arrarzged as follows : extract with acetone, ethanol and diethylether. ... e-Suscepttbtltty of Cukx plplens Carvae to tnsecttcides, insect growth regucators (’L6Rs) each combtrad with a of Trttorr X-100. The addition of LC,, of Triton X-100 increased the toxicity of permethrin . On the other hand the surfactant decreased the toxicity of fenitrothion. The addition of LC,, of Triton X- 100 reduced the efficacy of all tested IGRs.
