Abstract

NHL is a disease of world wide distribution affecting all ages and both sexes and it constitutes the third most frequent neoplastic disease in Egypt. The protein encoded by the Bcl-2 (B-cell lymphoma/leukemia-2) gene is a major regulator of programmed cell death, the process by which many chemotherapeutic agents ultimately effect tumor cell kill. The Bcl-2 represents a new category of chemoresistance genes that regulate the normal physiologic pathway for programmed cell death and it was reported that there was a connection between Bcl-2 and the resistance to chemotherapy. So, Bcl-2 antisense therapy discovered recently and led to downregulation of Bcl-2 protein and improvement in symptoms of lymphoma. So, Bcl-2 antisense therapy may be the most important potential application to overcome chemoresistance.fie aims of the present work were to measure the cell lysate level of Bcl-2 protein in NHL patients, to analyze the rearrangement of the Bcl-2 gene by conventional cytogenetics, to study the association between Bcl-2 protein expression and chromosomal rearrangement and to evaluate the diagnostic utility of measuring Bcl-2 protein in NHL patients.
