Abstract

Portal hypertension represents an increase in the hydrostatic pressure within the portal vein or its tributaries or when the wedged hepatic vein pressure is more t h y 5 mmHg higher than the inferior vena cava pressure. One the most serious complication of portal hypertension is portal hypertensive gastropathy. This can cause non variceal upper gastrointestinal bleeding and uncontrollable haemorrhage fiom portal hypertensive gastropathy has occurred.Portal hypertensive gastropathy is diagnosed on the basis of combination of endoscopic and histopathological features. There are two types gastropathy diagnosed by endoscopy, mild and severe form. On histological examination there is mucosal and submucosal vascular changes without significant histological changes of inflammation. This study was designed to compare between portal hypertensive gastropathy in cirrhosis, Schistosomal hepatic fibrosis and mixed cirrhosis and fibrosis as regard endoscopic findings, biochemical tests and l~istopathological findings. Also this study was carried out to determine if portal hypertensive gastropathy has a relation with the severity of liver disease or with the grade of oesophageal varices.
