Abstract

The purpose of the cardiovascular system is to deliver oxygen to the tissues of the body and, in turn, to remove waste products from those metabolically active tissues.!ll The importance of pregnancy as a dangerous event in the lives of women with heart diteases has served to stimulate interest in the effects of gestation on maternal hemodynamics.12’Pregnancy imposes unique demands on the cardiovascular system and the cardiovascular system meets these demands through a number of adaptive responses.11! The cardiovascular system undergoes profound alterations during pregnancy.131 The changes in cardiac output, heart rate and systemic vascular resistance have been well characterized during the latter two thirds of pregnancy. 13>41
