Abstract

In recent years there has been an enormous increase in the awareness and understanding of the role of trace elements in human health and disease.Series of studies were done in the last years studying the changes of trace element levels in differnt diseases including liver diseases. Current evidence suggests that a disturbance in the cocentration of trace elements can produce various neuropsychiatric symptomatology. The present study aims to correlate the levels of zinc, manganese, copper, and magnesium in the cerebrospinal fluid(C.S.F) and serum in late cases of schistosomal hepatic fibrosis, presenting with neuropsychiatric manifestations i.e patients with porto-systemic encephalopathy. The study included 15 patients, their ages ranged from 20-58 years, they were 12 males and 3 females, all of them proved to have schistosomal infection. The study also included 10 normal individuals as a control group. All the patients were subjected to thorough clinical examination with special attention to liver, spleen, ascites, neuropsychiatr ic mkfeSations. The investigations carried out included stool and urine analysis, liver and kidney function tests and determination of zinc, copper, manganese, and magnesium in serum and CSF by means of atomic absorption spectrophotometer .
