Abstract

Kochia indica Wight is an Egypti an summer annu a1 weed. It has a high growth rate under ruderal conditions. Under favourable conditions, it grows up to two meters. Such growth habit gives a dense cover, and so serves for soil conservation and improvement. It was introduced into Egypt since the last world war, with the intention of using it as a fodder plant in summer time when a1 1 other annuals used for this purpose are out of season. It is now occupying man-. made habitats in the Nile Delta and other related regions different from its original habitats. The present study aims at estimating the productivity of this plant in different habitats, assessing its nutrient and organic status in order to evaluate its importance in the animal nutrition in this region, and evaluating the relationships between plant production, population characteristics and habitat factors. Thirty-nine plots were selected along the climatic gradient from north to south of the Nile Delta. The plots were selected in four sites representing two provinces (El-Gharbiya and Kafr El-Sheikh) and five major habitats (road sides, waste lands, railway sides, canal banks, and saline lands). The size of population was studied in 3 permanent plots representing the five previously mentioned habitats.
