Abstract The cytotoxic effects of the two herbicides n i t r a l i n and diuron have been investigated on the mitotic process and the mitotic -chromosomes and on the amounts of nucleic acids and proteins in the roots of -Vicia- faba and Hordeum vulgare. Two methods of treatments have been applied. In the f i r s t method seeds of both plants were soaked in three different concentrations of the herbicides for 4 and 24 hours and in the other method actively growing root t i p s were treated with the same concentrations for the same period of treatments. The concentrations of n i t r a l i n used were 5 x 10-’~, 5 x ~o-~anMd 5 x ~o-~anMd t he concentrations of diuron applied were 15 x 1oL2M, 15 x ~o-~anMd 1 5 x ~o-~reMspe ctively. The two herbicides tested have been found able of exerting a mitodepressive action on mitosis i n both V-. -fa ba and -H. vulgare .... . when roots were directly treated with the herbicidks. Following seed soaking treatments, however, only diuron was found to be effective in lowering the mitotic activity. Both seed soaking and root treatment experiments were generally found to induce an alteration of the frequency of mitotic phases in both plants. The most evident effect was the accumulation of metaphase configurations at the expence of prophase and ana-telophase particularly in the seed soaking experiments. |
