Abstract

This thesis contains study of the electrochemical and spectral behaviour of some hydrazone compounds to obtain full information about their electrode reaction in buffer solutions at mercury electrode. The thesis includes three chapters: Chapter I contains a literature survey on the electrochemical studies of organic compounds containing hydrazone and azo linkage in addition to their metal complexes. Chapter I1 contains the experimental part of the work such as preparation of the solid compounds, preparation of solutions, measureing techniques and the instnunentains used in the present study. Chapter I11 consists of six parts: The first part, includes the results obtained from the polarographic studies of the compounds under investigation (I-IX) in universal buffer solutions, containing 40% (v/v) DMF of different pH values (2-12). The polarogrmas of compounds ( I, III, W, VIII ) showed one single wave whereas the rest of the compounds showed two reduction waves of unequal heights. The half-wave potential (ElI2) of all the investigated compounds shifted towards more negative values with increasing pH of the electrolysis medium confiing that hydrogen ions are consumed in the reduction processes. The plots of the halfwave potential (El/*) versus pH give linear correlations of positive slopes. The limiting current (i,) of each wave is proportional to the square root of mercury height.
