Abstract

Although it is easy enough to describe in theory the functioning of any community in terms
of simple linear food chain, with herbivore feeding on primary producer, carnivore feeding
on herbivore, etc., in practice, the interrelationships between populations are so complex
that they can be considered more accurately as a web, rather than a clhaun. Consequently, the
energy does not flow directly from one trophic level to the next, but meanders within the
various trophic levels.
