Abstract

The aim of this study was to throw some light on the changes in phytoplankton communities in response to water pollution in Gharbia governorate, with special reference to the effect of some heavy metals (Cd’ ’+ ,C u2 + and Zn 2+ ), as pollutants, on the growth and metabolic activities of two dominant unicellular green algal species Chlorella vulgaris and Scenedesmus bijuga. 5Tw o6taid resulis couhf 6e summarized in tfk fobwiqg points: 1) Temperature of drains was higher than that of canals which was correlated with the dominancy of cyano-bacteria 2) Water pH has a remarkable effect on the quality and quantity of phytopalnkton species 3) Carbonate and bicarbonate concentrations were much higher in drains than river Nile and canals. 4) Conductivity values of drains were much higher than those of canals, whereas the dissolved oxygen showed a reversed behaviour. 5) Heavy metals concentrations were higher in drains than in canals, and showing a marked increase in winter. 6) Chlorophyta, Bacillariophyta, Cyanobacteria and Eugleno- phyta represent the most dominant algal divisions in drains and canals. However, the total counts of the algal species were much lower in polluted locations than in non-polluted ones. 7) There were marked changes in the quality and quantity of the different species. These changes were season and location dependent.
