Abstract

the present study was to investigate the effect of two levels of Cu and Pb as environmental pollutants on growth, pigments, metabolism and mineral nutrients of two grain crop species; Triticum aestivum and Sor~hum bicolor. Grains of each species were grown in sand culture irrigated with nutrient solution containing different levels of Cu and Pb and their combinations. The pH of the nutrient solution was maintained at 6.5 and the culture was washed once every two weeks. Samples were harvested at the seedling, vegetative, flowering and fruiting stages. Fresh leaf samples were used for the determination of pigments, while remaining shoots and roots were dried in an air circulating oven to constant weight at 65” C, for the determination of carbohydrates, proteins and mineral elements. Results indicated that high Cu level as well as low levels of both Cu and Pb had increased shoot dry weight of 1. aestivum and S. bicolor, while low Cu and high Pb decreased root dry weight of the latter species only. In 1. aestivum pigments content increased with all treatments but decreased in S. bicolor except with low and high Cu. Application of Cu had enhanced the accumulation of carbohydrates and proteins in both 1. aestivum and S. bicolor.
