Abstract

The present thesis consists of three parts, viz: introduction, experimental, results and discussion. In the first part a literature survey for the previous studies of mixed ligand complexes, Sclziff bases complexes and binuclear metal-Schiff bases complex. The second part includes a detailed acco~znt about the experimental procedures, methods of preparation and measurements on the terna~y complexes with transition metals [Mn(II), Co(II), Ni(I1) and Cu(II)] and binuclear complexes by condensation the ternary complexes with some aliphatic and aromatic diamines. Part 111, contains the results and studying of the ternary and binuclear metal - complexes : Studies of the metal chelates in solution : Conductometric titration for determination the stoichiometry of the complexes. Spectrophotometric studies of metal chelates in solution for detection and determination of complex formation in solution and determination the stability constant of the complex by : a- The molar ratio method. b- The co~~tinuovuasr iation method. Potentiometric titration. Studies of solid complexes, contains the results and discussion of the metal chelates and Schiff bases complexes, the measurements for these complexes are: Element analysis. Condrietivity in DMF for complexes whch are soluble in Dm. Thermal analysis, differential thermal analysis (DTA) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) gave idea about the structure of the complex and the activation energy for the complexes were calculated. The ir absorption spectra of ternary complexes and binuclear metal- Schff bases complexes gave an idea about the nature of bonds talung part during complexation. Mass spectra for some complexes gave the molecular weight of these complexes. The electronic spectra of the solid chelates are studied in Nujol mull. Some new bands are observed which are assigned and related to the spin allowed d-d transition of the metal ion according to crystal field splitting. The CT- band due to L+M or M+L transition appears at longer or shorter wavelength compared to CT band of the ligand cont”1rming the interactior! between the metal ions and the ligands. The magnetic susceptibilities of representative solid chelates are measured using the Gouy method, from which the magnetic moments (pe~a)n d the number of unpaired d- electron in the metal ion are determined. The stereochemistry of these complexes are then detected using Pauling’s theory. The esr spectra of some chelates of different metal ions are recorded. The calculated g- values indicate that the metal environment is different for such complexes. The electrical conductivity measurements of the solid organic ligands, their metal chelate and some binuclear metal- Schiff bases complexes.
