Abstract

Recently there has been a growing interest in low cost ac drives to meet the needs for reducing cost. Improvements in power semiconductor switch technology have significantly reduced the cost and size of such drives and improved waveform quality. This thesis studies the performance of a conventional three phase VSI-PWM Rectifier/Inverter system with twelve switches with three phase induction motor load as compared to three phase to three phase system with eight switches and single phase to three phase system with six switches.
The three systems are capable of operation with unity line power factor, sinusoidal input currents and bi-directional power flow. In addition operation as a programmable line power factor controller, open loop and closed loop control of the system with six switches are also investigated.
The study includes the simulation analysis based on SIMULINK toolbox provided by MATLAB programming package for the previous three systems.
Moreover a practical realization of a two legs inverter with four switches is constructed and tested. The practical experiments include the necessary compatible hardware interface circuits and software programs.
