The development of the so called ”Ultra high speed relays” based on the traveling wave and the superimposed components was the beginning of utilizing the fault generated transient for the purpose of Extra High Voltage transmission line protection.
In this thesis a new tool that is being suggested and named ”Cos-Sin” is introduced. The new tool has the capability of detecting fault generated transient frequencies. It successfully detected fault presence on Extra High Voltage transmission lines and the case of one line open in large Induction motors.
The thesis introduces a supervising relay that is based mainly on the new Cos-Sin tool. The supervising relay is applied on the 500 KV Cairo Zone, where it supervises Cairo bus bar besides all the lines attaching it to the adjacent bus bars. The Egyptian 500 KV system is simulated using the Alternative Transient Program, while the relay software is done using the MATLAB language.
