The lack of digital maps at different scales is considered an impediment for GIS applications due to the high cost of the conversion process and the absence of automated generalization tools. Hence, the conversion process is repeated for each scale and, the attribute database is rebuilt to be relevant to the geometric modifications due to scale change.
Manual generalization is the oldest type of generalization, in which the process is taken place on map sheets by the cartographers who have experience and knowledge about the rules of generalization. The purpose of manual generalization is to make the map more easily interpreted and solve the conflict problems due to the scale reduction. The requirements of visualization or communication are the main purpose of the manual generalization process.
Due to the advancement and development of the computer and information technology, the world now directs toward automation of all the manual processing, so that the manual generalization process has to follow this direction. In the automated generalization context, since we deal with digital database not with hard hardcopy map sheets, the matter is different and the purpose might be different Generalization can be used not only for the cartographic visualization and communication purpose, but also for analysis and reduction of data.
