Abstract Rapid industrial development in joining processes has put high pressure on characterization of engineering materials and their joints, especially in the automotive and aircraft industries. In this study, three different adhesives were experimentally evaluated when used in bonded joints. These adhesive bonded joints were dynamically tested for shearing strength, under variable testing conditions. Adherand interfacial surface roughness, adhesive layer thickness and loading rate were examined for their influential effects on these joints. A modified version of the well known SHBP apparatus was used in these dynamic tests, together with a complete digital data acquisition measuring system. Experimental results showed the intolerable effects of the studied factors on the dynamic shearing strength of these pin-collar adhesive bonded joints.
