Abstract

Over the last decades, the need for highly purifiedrare earth oxides has increased as applications expandedand diversified. High grade (99.99%) europium oxide hasimportant uses as red phosphor color television screensand incomputer monitors, compact fluorescent lightbulbs, X-ray and tomography scans. In the Egyptian rareearth separation project a middle fraction of rare earthelements has been produced waiting forafurtherprocessing. This research focus on the separation ofeuropiumusingacombinedchemicalreductionprecipitation and solvent extraction processes as a part of the project aimed to produce purified rare earth oxides.
In this work a systematic study on the separation ofeuropium from a middle rare earths concentrate derivedform Egyptian black sand monazite wasmade. Theseparation process is based on a combined reductionprecipitation process, in which the europium is reduced bycommercial zinc metal to its bivalent state followed by theprecipitation of its sparingly soluble europous sulphate.
Two approaches were Investigated to bring about thecombined reduction-precipitation processes, namelyin-situzinc reduction technique and the zinc columnreduction method.Foreachapproach,thefactors..
