Abstract

The study of the crystallization characteristics of the eutectic (954±4oC) glass based on Li2O-CaO-SiO2 system, modified by adding MgO at the expense of Li2O, CaO or (Li2O+CaO) or replacing Li2O by Al2O3 or replacement ZnO instead of CaO was carried out. Minor additives of CaF2 or TiO2 were added, as nucleating agents, to the eutectic batch in amounts of 3.0 or 1.0 g, respectively over 100 g glass oxide constitutions of the glass batch composition Eight groups of glass compositions were formulated as follows: 1- The first group of glass was based on the Li2O-CaO-SiO2 eutectic glass (954±4oC) and modified by adding 3.00 g or 1.00 g of CaF2 or TiO2, respectively over 100 g of glass oxide [i.e. glasses Nos. G1, G1F and G1T, Table (1)] 2- The second group of glasses was derived from Li2O-CaO-SiO2 eutectic glass which was modified by replacement 4.00, 8.00, 12.00 mole % of MgO at the expense of equivalent amount of Li2O [i.e. glasses Nos. G1, G2, G3 and G4, Table (2)] 3- The third group of glasses was also formulated from Li2O-CaO-SiO2 eutectic glass but modified by replacement 6.00 and 11.50 mole % of MgO at the expense of equivalent amounts of CaO [i.e. glasses Nos G1, G5 and G6, Table (3)] 4- The fourth group of glasses was derived from Li2O-CaO-SiO2 system and modified by substitution of 11.50 mole % of MgO at the expense of equivalent amounts of (Li2O+CaO) [i.e. glasses Nos. G1, G5 and G7, Table (4)] 86 5- The fifth group of glasses was derived from Li2O-CaO-SiO2 eutectic glass and modified by replacement 6.00 and 11.50 mole % Al2O3 at the expense of equivalent amounts of Li2O [i.e. glasses Nos. G1, G8 and G9, Table (5)] 6- The sixth group of glasses was derived from Li2O-CaO-Al2O3-SiO2 system and modified by substitution of 6.00 and 11.50 mole % of MgO at the expense of equivalent amounts of CaO [i.e. glasses Nos. G9, G10 and G11, Table (6)] 7- The seventh group of glasses was derived from Li2O-CaO-SiO2 eutectic glass which was modified by replacement 6.00 and 11.50 mole % ZnO at the expense of equivalent amounts of CaO [i.e. glasses Nos. G1, G12 and G13, Table (7)] 8- The eighth group of glasses was derived from group 7 (Li2O-CaO-ZnOSiO2 system) and modified by replacement 11.5 mole % of Al2O3 at the expense of equivalent amounts of Li2O [i.e. glasses Nos. G12, G13, G14 and G15, Table (8)].
