Abstract

Primary congenital glaucoma is a specific term referring to an isolated developmental defect in the trabecular meshwork leading to decrease in the facility of aqueous outflow and an increase in intraocular pressure. The management of primary congenital glaucoma is essentially surgical.
Traditional surgery for congenital glaucoma has centered on incising the abnormal trabecular tissue by goniotomy or trabeculotomy procedure. Some studies have reported successful results following primary trabeculectomy in the management of congenital glaucoma. Recently, some pediatric ophthalmology surgeons combined trabeculotomy with trabeculectomy during the initial surgery for congenital glaucoma aiming at improving the control of intraocular pressure in these cases.
In the current study, we attempted to compare trabeculotomy, and combined trabeculotomy-trabeculectomy procedures in the management of cases of PCG unsuitable for goniotomy due to corneal haze.
A prospective randomized study was performed including 30 eyes of 18 patients with unoperated primary congenital glaucoma dating since birth or within the first three years of life.
