Abstract

Every year more than four millions people die from cancer. Pam is one of the mmon symptom m patients with advanced cancer. It has been estimated that 80- feacer patients in terminal stages have significant pain. Cancer pain usually is ous, unremitting and steadily gets worse. Visceral malignancy is associated with intractable chronic abdominal pain.
If the primary disease is not amenable to surgery, radiation or chemotherapy, alliative therapy becomes the major goal of treatment.
In this field, the anesthesiologist can use a therapeutic neurolytic blocks with ently good results. The aim of the permanent neurolysis in advanced malignancy ovi4e pain relief sufficient to allow as nearly normal daily function as possible relatively pain free death. Ethyl alcohol is one of the most reliable agents for the
•on of chemical neurolysis. The success of chemical neurolysis depends on the tion of an adequate number of afferent fibers.
Sympathetic neurolytic blocks via celiac plexus and lumbar ganglia blocks, and
c neurolytic blocks via subarachnoid and epidural blocks are the commonly used ques for relief of chronic pain of abdominal and pelvic cancer.
How best to assess pain, is a difficult question.
