Abstract

The technique of total intravenous anaesthesia was studied so that minor procedures can be carried by a simplified technique which avoids hazards and sophisticated maneuvers of conventional methods of anaesthesia.
The present work was designed to evaluate an intravenous anaesthetic (propofol) as a sole agent in day case short surgical procedures and in the same time to compare it with the standard intravenous anaesthetic agent (thiopentone). The comparison between the two drugs was involved many clinical features as measurements of vital signs, assessment of recovery and side effects.
This study was carried out on 200 patients of both sexes scheduled for minor diagnostic procedures such as cystoscopy, dilatation and curettage and breast biopsies. The patients were ASA class I and II with age range between 18 - 65 years and body weight between 50 - 85 kg.
All patients received standard premedication half an hour before induction of anaesthesia by LM atropine sulphate 0.01
