Abstract

The dermatophytes are a group of closely related keratinophilic fungi, representing a well-defined group of about 40 species placed under three genera:Trichophyton, Microsporum and Epidermophytori. These dermatophytes grow on the skin, nails and hairs causing the common but seldom serious infections collectively known as ringworm infections.Ringworm infections are among the commonest human infections, this is noticed especially in Egypt where dermatophyte infection is a very important cause of population suffering. This study aimed at isolating the prevalent dermatophyte species in Menoufia Governorate and studying the relation between the isolated species, the clinical pictures and the residence of the patient as well as the presence of any associated bacteria together with dermatophyte infections. The work aimed also at studying the susceptibility of some of the isolated dermatophytes to the antifungal drugs; griseofulvin and ketoconazole with determination of the minimum inhibitory concentration. Serum level of ketoconazole was also determined. The study was conducted over the period from September 1990 to August 1991, on 189 patients suffering from various ringworm lesions. Their ages ranged between 6 months and 60 years with a mean of 18 years. The duration of infection ranged from one week to 3 years.
