Abstract Congenital heart diseases form one of the major health problems in infancy and childhood. Children suffering from these diseases are exposed to infections more frequent than normal children. Neutrophils form one of the body’s first lines of defence against infections. The aim of the present work is to evaluate the opsonic activity of the sera of patients’ with CHD on the phagocy— tic activity of normal neutrophils to find out if there is any defect which would add to the increased susceptibility these patients to infections. The study included 30 children, 10 as normal controls, and 20 with CHD (13 with acyanotic heart and 7 with cyanotic type).. Assessment of the opsonic activity was done by a method modified after that described by Wilkinson (1977). The results obtained showed a slight defect in opsonic activity on neutrophils in patients with CHD when compared |
