Abstract

Although bone allografts have been used in a variety of clinical circumstances for some 100 years, bone banks such as are described in the present essay are of relativly recent vintage.
The operation of initiation of a bone bank is based on the premise that the excision, preparation, banking and implantation of bone allografts constitute a clinical service.
If this premise is maintained and the surgeon who excise and prepares allografts assumes joint responsibity for the care of the recipient of the aliograft with the surgeon who implants the aliograft, a working clinical relationship is estabilised.
This relationship is particulary important in the initial evaluation of the patient, in determining whether replacement of the excised bone will best serve the patient, and certainly in selecting a particular aliograft for a given patient.
Since the tissue bank serves as a focal point for gathering information on the recipients of bone allografts, the cumulative multinstitutional experience may aid an individual surgeon in the decision-making process regarding the management of a given patient and in dealing with problems that may arise.
The operation of a tissne bank is costly, but the expense is a necessary one-It makes possible adequate quality control assures the optimum processing and storage conditions for bone aliograft.
