Abstract

Infertility is defined as failure to conceive for one year without the use of contraception. It is estimated to occur in 10-15% of couples. The use of contraception and PID are accused to increase the prevelance in developed countries.
Of the many different. causes of infertility, tubal occlusion is one possibility that needs to be excluded or confirmed by investigations. One of the important missions for the infertility physicion is not necessarily to take credit for achieving a pregnancy, but to speed up the period of time required for that achievement and for couples in their thirties, the sooner a problem is detected, the better the results. Therefore, every effort should be recommended to minimize the time needed to achieve a correct diagnosis of the cause of infertility.
For many years, all physician involved in the evaluation and treatment of infertility rely heavily on the informations provided from the traditional HSG which has provided images of the lumina of the fallopian tubes that are not available by other diagnostic means and it also gives the most accurate outline of the uterine cavity. Laparoscopy being an operative maneuver comes late in the investigations of infertility despite being the most accurate and informative procedure.
It is important now to take account of the advances in technology that neccesiate the introduction of this study.
The aim of the present study is to assess tubal patency by the new modality hysterosalpingoultrasonography (HSUG) and compare the results with those obtained from the conventional method namely HSG considering the result of chromopertubation at laparoscopy as a control.
HSG as it is time consuming, labour intensive, uncomfortable, carries the risk of reaction to contrast media and radiation hazard to the ovaries, also, technical errors are common and most accurate results need scanning equipments.
